Cherry, Eh?

The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics came to an end yesterday, and we (us Canadians) went out with a bang! A great win, for a great nation.

For those of you who watched the game, you probably didn't forget a short interview with a man named Don Cherry. Cherry, an NHL head coach turned tv host whose best known in Canada for his analysis on "Hockey Night in Canada" is quite a unique fellow, eh.

Now I wouldn't go so far as to call him a style icon, but I have to say, we can all learn an important lesson in cojones from Cherry. For the record, I don't necessarily agree with his clothing choices, but I can certainly appreciate his "this is me" attitude.

Cherry is certainly not afraid to be himself and have a unique sense of style, as we can see from his custom-made floral-print double-breasted jackets and collars stiff and upright enough that he could take a nap standing up.

Think of him as the Canadian Craig Sager (although Cherry definitely takes the crown).

Regardless of his crazy costumes, I think the lesson to be learned from this man is important: don't be afraid to be yourself. Don't dress (or act, or strive, for that matter) to "fit in" with those around you. Don't be afraid to take risks because you are afraid of what your friends, or co-workers, or whoever might think. Express yourself and be true to who you are, in the way you dress, and otherwise.

The New Layering: Denim Jacket

One of my favorite looks is finally hitting the streets in a big way. Recently I've been seeing denim trucker jackets worn as layers under outerwear. I love this look! (and have for some time). Here are some recent examples shot by GQ's new street photographer during NYC fashion week:

For the record, I've been rocking this for over a year now, but I'm an honest guy...I stole it from Kanye West, who has been pictured doing this as far back as 2008. Trend-setter? Love him or hate him, I think so!

If you're going to try this look, your best bet is to get a fitted denim jacket (preferably a vintage Levi classic trucker) and wear it buttoned, with your outerwear (darker in color and contrasting in fabric) left open.

If you're not into playing copy-cat, this can serve simply as an inspiring "new" way to wear layers. At the very least, it can help you think outside the box.

Simple Alterations - Part II

So much positive feedback. And I can't stress the importance, and benefit, of simple alterations.

Can jacket sleeves be "opened" (made working)?
Yes. However, this is very tricky work, and only a very good tailor (one who works for a custom clothing shop, for example) will be willing and able to punch holes in a garment. Cost: approx $25-35 per sleeve

Can pleated pants be made flat-front?
Technically, yes, but this involves remaking the entire waistband of the pants, and re-engineering the fit. The results can vary, not to mention it is very expensive. Cost: just get some new pants, it will likely be less expensive and you can ensure the proper fit

Can a shirt be taken-in (made slimmer)?
Absolutely. I've had the body slimmed on dozens of shirts. It's a simple cut and sew. Also, the sleeves can be taken in as well. Cost: $15-30 body, $10-25 sleeves

Can shirt sleeves be made longer?

No. (unless you find some similar fabric to be added at the shoulder...which is ridiculous...so no)

Can shirt sleeves be made shorter?

Yes, by some seamstresses. The sleeve is removed, fabric is cut, and sleeve is re-attached. Cost: $20-35 per sleeve.

What a tailor can & can't do (Part 1 - Suit Jacket/Blazer)

I've said it time and time again, looking good in your clothing is all about fit! It's much better to have a $250 H&M suit that fits properly then to have a $2500 Armani suit that doesn't. Trust me!

With that said, when shopping for tailored clothing it is important to understand what alterations your tailor (and by tailor, I mean your typical local seamstress) can and cannot do. So here is a brief FAQ of basic tailoring services along with approximate price ranges (based on NYC prices).

Can the shoulders be extended (made larger)?
No.

Can the shoulders be taken-in (made smaller)?
In theory, yes, but this means reconstructing the entire jacket and can be very expensive (in many cases, more expensive than the jacket itself). For this reason, make sure you buy a jacket that fits properly in the shoulders! Cost: not worth it

Can the sleeves be made longer?
In most cases, yes, but only by the amount of fabric that is available on the underside of the sleeve, up to the beginning of the sleeve lining (see pic below). Also keep in mind the if the jacket has working or "surgeon's" buttons, those holes cut in the fabric cannot be covered or moved. A good tailor can, however, add a button hole or two if necessary to balance the extended sleeved (I wear 5 buttons on my sleeves anyway). Cost: $15-30 per sleeve (extra button hole(s) not included)

Can a suit sleeve be shortened?
Yes, but again, if the buttons on the sleeves are functional, then shortening the sleeve can bring the button holes awkwardly close to the end of the sleeve. Handle proportions with care. Cost: $15-30 per sleeve

Can a jacket be let-out (made roomier) in the sides?
More than likely no, because a typical off-the-rack suit comes with very little seam allowance on the sides.

Can a jacket be taken-in (made slimmer) in the sides?
Yes! This one alteration can make a significant improvement in the fit of the jacket. Cost: $25-$60

Can a jacket be made longer?
No.

Can a jacket be made shorter?
In theory, yes a jacket can be "chopped", but this is risky because it can throw off the balance of the pockets as well as the proportion of the button stance. Cost: $80-100+

Can the "roll" at the back of my neck be removed?
Yes, but only by an experienced tailor. Cost: $50-75

Lastly. Is it worth paying $50-100 in alterations for a jacket or suit that wasn't very expensive?
ABSOLUTELY.

Your tie, at it's widest point, should be about the same width as your lapels (or slightly slimmer, but never wider).

This will give you a good balance. And as we all know, life is all about good balance.

Reader Question: Too Small for Velvet?

I was recently throwing together an idea for an outfit I had that involves a velvet blazer. When I showed friends and co-workers pictures, they all seemed to like the outfit. However, a couple people said the same thing, "You're too small for velvet." I'm 5'9" with a lean, rower's build. Could you explain why velvet may be a poor choice for me?

I was just putting together a post with a message that goes something like this: don't let others decide what you wear! You should dress how you want to dress, in a manner that makes you feel good, and to express yourself. If I changed every time somebody commented on my outfit, I would have nothing to wear! With that said, it is also important to understand what works for you, and what simply doesn't (some people are haters, but some people are right when they say you look ridiculous).

Too small for velvet? Nahhh. Never heard of it. Besides, I hate "rules" like that. Keep in mind, though, that velvet does attract attention, so people will be looking. And when people glance, the first thing they'e going to notice is your most obvious physical attribute - body size, and in your case - your height.

It really depends on your level of confidence. Some guys are self conscious about their height or weight, and for those guys I recommend staying away from loud clothing such as bold pinstripes, bright colors and, yes, velvet jackets.

Tip-of-the-Day: Lose the super skinny sh-t

A movement starts. Men start wearing their clothes more fitted, in part due to European influences. More and more men shop for slim clothing, putting new found effort toward looking stylish. Time passes.

A trend starts. Trendsters get wind of this new "tailored" look and, in what seems like a natural progression, bring it to the next level. Slim turns to skinny, and stylish begins to look a whole lot like corny. A trend dies - some men go down with it.

Seriously, fellas, enough with the super skinny sh-t. In particular, ties.

There is nothing more "trying-too-hard-looking" than a tie that can be mistaken for your little niece's fat sneaker laces. At 1" (2.54 cm) wide, neckwear screams "look at me, I'm really cool!".

Your tie, like your clothing, should be slim, not skinny. The difference can be inches, or fractions of inches, but it is crucial.

When it comes to neckwear, try not to go any slimmer than 2.5" wide (2.75"is my ideal width...for now). Sooner or later tie widths are going to swing the other way, along with lapel widths and jacket lengths.

Oh yeah, and proportions are key! While I try to figure out a proper tie-width-to-waist-size ratio, lets just say that if you are a big guy, a skinny tie won't look any better on you than skinny jeans would.

Tip-of-the-Day: De-Jacketing

A mentor of mine once told me "If you put your suit jacket on the back of a chair and lean back on it, your suit jacket will look as if you put it on the back of a chair and leaned back on it".

I often walk into restaurants or office buildings and see men in collared shirts sitting with their jackets all squashed behind them on their chairs. I never really understood this.

So today's tip is simple.

It is not necessary to remove your jacket if you are sitting at a restaurant, or in an office setting. Usually, I leave mine on all day. A man almost always looks better with his jacket on, and if the fit is right, it shouldn't be uncomfortable. (Also, keep in mind that a well tailored jacket can easily hide a not-so-well-tailored shirt).

However, if you really feel the need to take it off, most places where de-jacketing is appropriate should have a coat rack, coat check, or some kind of closet. So no more walking around in squashed wrinkled jackets.

Reader Question: iTux

I am helping a friend pick out a tux for his wedding, and was wondering what suggestions you would have for a tall, portly man looking for something classy but conservative. Would a vest be better than a cumberbun to give a slimmer appearance? What about straight tie vs. bow tie? Shawl lapel vs. peak? Thanks for the help!

SB:

Great question! If there is ever a time when a man wants to look his best, it's when he is wearing a tuxedo. For a "portly" man, dressing for your body type is all about drawing attention to your "assets" rather than your "liabilities". With that said, I would suggest a two-piece peak lapel tuxedo with a straight tie.

The peak lapels will draw attention to the shoulders (thus taking attention away from the mid-section). Stay away from the vest, it will make your friend look too "stuffed" and it distorts the perfect black/white ratio that makes a classic tuxedo so sharp. Same goes for cumberbuns; they are outdated and will only draw eyes to the stomach. Also, consider a white cotton or linen pocket square folded straight and just peaking from the breast pocket, again, to accentuate the chest.

Your friend should wear a long tie rather than a bow tie on his big day because the north-south line will offer a slimming effect. Along that same line (no pun intended) your friend should leave the belt at home and wear black suspenders. This will allow him to "float" his waist, rather than choosing to strap his pants above or below his belly. Also, a belt (like any accessories, lines, or stripes that run east-west) would only draw attention to his width.

Also, keep in mind that fit is even more important if you are a heavy guy. Some big guys think that a "roomy" suit will hide the fact that they are overweight. This is not true. A bad fit makes you look sloppy, not slimmer. Lastly, a clean shave and a fresh haircut can go a looong way to looking more put-together.

Some other general tuxedo guidelines:

- 1 button is best

- The lapels should be 100% satin, and ideally your tie should be made from the same bolt of fabric

- Like a suit, double vented looks best (in my opinion)

- No collar pins, tie bars, brooches, lapel pins, stripes socks, chunky bracelets, oversized watches...or other "statement" accessories. Its a tuxedo, keep in simple, keep it classic

- No button-down collar shirts. Semi-spread is best

- French cuffs with small, simple cuff links

- Keep your jacket buttoned when standing

- Black socks, simple elegant black leather lace-up shoes, freshly shined (skip the cheap-looking patent leather shoes)

- White shirt. Black tie. Period.

Hey reader, you are not alone!

I always knew I had a pretty good following from the amount of email questions that I get, but I never knew the real "numbers". I'm also not the most tech-savy person in the world, so when a friend of mine introduced me to google analytics - a free statistics generator for my blog - I was absolutely blown away to see how strong my readership really is and how far and wide these posts touch down.

Tip-of-the-Day: A note on shin cleavage

There are certain little things, let's call them "pet peeves" for lack of a better expression, that can really ruin an outfit for me. One of them is the length of a guy's socks.

No matter how great a man's outfit is, if he crosses his legs and suddenly you can see a small area of pale, hairy leg between the top of his sock and the hem of his pants...attention is immediately drawn to it and it ruins his look. Yes, I am anal about details like this.

As a solution, simply make sure you buy socks that are long enough to cover the gap, and pull them up all the way. Remember, the shorter your pants, the higher they will pull when you sit.

I don't necessarily recommend this, but as a more extreme solution for guys who insist on crossing their legs but have extra-skinny ankles and thus have a problem with schlubby falling socks...you could try sock garters. If pulled-off (and up) correctly, I could imagine it being a really cool "retro" accessory with the right outfit. After all, with lower east side hipsters bringing back old-school classics like black plastic frames, timex watches, doc marten boots and polaroid cameras...perhaps these are the next "cool" thing.

Reader Questions: Boat Shoes + Socks?

I was wondering how you felt about wearing some sort of graphic socks with boat shoes. I know it's a stretch, but I do wear straight slim or skinny jeans (that aren't too tight) so a little bit of my foot shows.

SB:

You know how some car commercials have a caption that says something like "Proffessional driver on a closed course. Do not attempt". Well, this is kinda like that.

Normally, socks with boat shoes - hell no. But, like I always say, rules are meant to be broken, and the most stylish people break them regularly. I do have a couple guidelines that could help you succeed:

- Never with shorts
- Not in the middle of winter (even with socks, boat shoes are three-season)

- Keep your pant leg opening slim. Like 7.5" across slim.

- Keep your inseam short. Like hardly touching the back of your shoe, hemmed at an angle so the front hits even higher, short. (or roll your pants/jeans)

- Wear striped socks, not argyle, check, or polka dot

- Wear the thicker, ribbed socks

- Keep the majority of the stripes muted, and consistent with the tone of your pants. Maybe one thin colorful stripe, but you don't want them to be too loud.

Tip-of-the-Day: Save the Pastels for the Summer

I kinda thought this was a little too "common sense" to blog about, but today I saw two different guys wearing easter-egg-colored shirts, under heavy (and oversized) black overcoats.

Fellas, lets save the pastel colored shirts and ties for the summer time. I can't really explain why, other than it just doesn't look right in 35 degree weather. I'm not saying you can't wear color in the winter, just that the hues should be muted. If you insist on wearing pinks and purples, keep them darker, stronger pinks and purples.

Most of the time I agree with GQ's fashion team...but I was surprised to see a couple of the colors in their new "Ultimate Winter Shirt-and-Tie Wardrobe" feature.

The bright pink shirt (2nd in the top row), and the teal/aqua shirt (3rd in the 3rd row) would be hard for alot of men to pull of in the summer, let alone the winter. Otherwise, mostly fail-safe options.

Tip-of-the-Day: Create Your Own "No-Show" Undershirt

For a working man (or anyone who wears collared shirts), an undershirt is an everyday essential. It soaks in your persperation, keeping your dress shirt clean and, more importantly, dry. You definitely don't want to be that guy:

The problem is, for those of us who wear dress shirts, but not ties, a classic v-neck undershirt poses a problem. When a tie-less button-up shirt is worn with the top 2 buttons undone (which looks best), the white v-neck undershirt creeps a little too high, allowing the top of it to be seen...which drives me crazy!

So here is my solution...

Get some basic v-neck undershirts like these (3 pack for around $29.50). Make sure they fit snug.

Then, use a pencil to lightly draw the outline of a deep "U" shape:

Next, find a pair of scissors, and cut along the lines.

Now you have the perfect undershirt to keep your underarms dry, and have that sexy open-chest look.

Ironically, this picture is perfect because the homemade undershirt would follow a similar line as the "bib" design on Sr. James' shirt.

After all, nobody is immune to embarassing pit stains. e.g. Glamour Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive":

As I've mentioned before, I only wear one watch. But I have a collection of bands and change them according to my outfit.

My new favorite watch band is the Nato G10 strap. It is 100% durable nylon and comes in a number of solid colors and stripes (the official "James Bond" edition being black/gray striped, as pictured).

The best part is, this great way to switch up your favorite watch can be picked up on eBay for about $15!

So feel free to pick up a couple different colors to add a unique punch to any outfit.

SB Endorses: The Sweat Trousers!

I am the opposite of an impulse shopper. I have a running list of things that I would like to add to my wardrobe, if I can find them. Every now and then, however, I'll come across something and say "Damn...I gotta have it".

The other day, it was these "luxury fleece" dress-sweats by the "Original American Outdoor Clothing Company" Woolrich.

These are sweat pants that you can wear to work! (provided you have a pretty cool boss).

I actually wore them to work yesterday (see below) and proved that, when styled correctly and hemmed properly, you can wear sweat pants with a tailored blazer and dressy lace-ups. Most people didn't even notice they were fleece - and those who did thought it was genius.

Who says work clothes can't be comfortable?

Reader Question: Denim Shirt

Ok here is a quick and easy one. Denim shirt. Should I? How should I pull it off?

Been looking at this one (below) from Banana Republic. Thinking I would get it, wash it a few times to give it a more worn-in look and wear it with dark unwashed jeans with a nice slim straight cut. Thoughts?

Absolutely!

I love denim shirts. I'm actually wearing one right now (a really beat-in version from RRL). I love the look. Styling can be a bit tricky though, but considering you are planning to lose your denim-shirt-virginity with jeans on, I'm assuming you know a thing or two about tricky styling. Just remember to keep the washes different, you don't want to end up looking like Jay Leno.

As a "safer" alternative, wear it with slim khakis, brown corduroys, or light gray jeans. Also, try to get a cut that is short enough that you can wear untucked, or nonchalantly half-tucked. And remember, you don't need to pair it with anything "in your face" or any loud accessories, the shirt already makes a statement.

Reader Question: Flat Front w/ Cuffs

Due to my build I find that flat front pants are more flattering. Since you typically only see cuffs on pleated pants, I’m at the point of buying my flat front pants longer and having the tailor create the cuffs. Is this a fashion faux pas?

Not at all! I do it all the time. In fact, I only wear flat front pants, and most of my heavier weight pants have cuffs. For a cooler look, try a wider 2 - 2 1/4" cuff, and keep the pants short with little to no break.

Tip-of-the-Day: The Top/Bottom Rule for Cardigans

Today's tip is simple.

When wearing a cardigan sweater, leave the top and bottom buttons undone.

Before:

Wearing the sweater all-buttoned-up creates an uptight looking high stance and a boxy straight bottom. Looks very mannequin-esk.

After:

Leaving the top button undone creates a deeper "V" stance which makes you look longer, leaner, and taller. Leaving the bottom button undone breaks up the boring straight-across line at the waist, and adds a sort of "sprezzatura" - Italian for stylish non-chalance.

Tip-of-the-Day: Dress like a cartoon!

So this is going to sound funny (no pun intended). You've probably never been advised to dress like a cartoon...but watching your favorite animated program can be a lesson in proper-fitting clothing! Don't ask me where I get this stuff...but most cartoon characters have perfectly fitting clothing (I know, because they don't have bodies).

The lesson here is that your clothing should follow the natural lines of your body. Your shoulder seams should hit at your shoulder (not hang off), your inseam should cover your leg (not too short showing your socks, and not too long bunching up at your shoes), your sleeves should hit straight down at your wrist (not bunch-up or hang into your hands), your collar should fit your neck (not hang off), etc.

Even Homer has a great tailor.

Reader Question: The Pant Problem

Hey Style Blogger,

Over time I've been able to find shirts that fit well, but have difficulty when it comes to pants. I've purchased a number of pants from brands like Banana Republic, but when I wear them under a fitted shirt/blazer they appear heavy/blocky. So getting that sleeker (not skinny pant) look is difficult. What brand/type of pants should I buy (that won't need to be chopped up at the tailor). I am willing to taper to 7" but want to know if there is more to it. I am seriously considering having my mom teach me how to sew.

I know exactly what you mean. Since there are so many factors that go into their fit (waist size, seat allowance, thigh width, calf width, inseam length, ankle width, posture, how you walk, how the fabric drapes, etc.) it is very difficult to find a pair of pants that fit properly.

I struggled for years trying to find the perfect fit, including countless visits to the seamstress (some good, some not so good). The last straw was when I had to throw out some pants because they were so chopped-up that they looked like a home-ec project.

Then I went custom, and never looked back. Not only can you get the exact fit you are looking for, but you can also choose from hundreds of fabrics and customize all the details to your preference. It may be slightly more expensive, but I would much rather have 2 pairs of perfect-fitting pants (probably dark navy and medium gray to start) than 4 pairs of ill-fitting pants. Besides, if they fit properly, they will last much longer since there is less strain on them from everyday movement.

Now that cold weather is officially upon us, it's time to break out the heavier fabrics. I love this time of year because I have some kind of fettish for heavy oxford cloths, wool flannels, tweeds, and cashmeres. In fact, I like these thicker fabrics so much, I try to wear them head to toe in cold weather, including in my breast pocket.

I was looking to change up my basic white linen/cotton pocket square that I wear so often for something heavier, and more colorful, but couldn't find anything I liked, and didn't really want to pay $75 for a fricking handkerchief. So, here's my secret...

Go to a thrift or goodwill store:

Pick up a plaid flannel shirt for about $4:

Cut a square 16" x 16" out of the back of the shirt:

TA-DA! You have a brand new, one-of-a-kind, winter-ized pocket square, for $4!

I have had a problem of wearing through the soles of shoes quickly and it is really frustrating. I had a pair of black hugo boss shoes that only lasted 6 months before i put a hole through the sole. I also own a pair of Teran shoes (a brand from buenos aires) and they are beautiful shoes but I have the same problem. The only pair that seems to hold up are my Ferragamos, but they were $300 and I would rather not spend that much if I dont have to. Please recommend some good shoes for me.

Wow, sounds like you are pretty rough on your shoes! I would recommend rubber soled shoes, with thicker bottoms, rather than slim leather soled shoes (a la Hugo Boss shoes). Rubber soles do not wear down as easily, and as an added bonus they are usually more comfortable for walking.

However, if you are like me and would rather wear slimmer, sleeker, leather soled shoes, as a second option I would recommend buying a quality (preferably hand-made) leather soled shoe. Although it will cost you a little more (like your Ferragamo's) the uppers will virtually last you a lifetime, and when the soles wear down, you can take them to your local shoe repair guy to have them re-soled at a fraction of the price of a new pair.

In addition, consider getting protective "taps" (plastic, not metal tap-dancing "clickers") on the toes and heels of your shoes. You can get this done for about $5 and it can dramatically delay the death of your shoes (assuming the toes and heels are taking the brunt of the damage...which for most guys is the case)

Another piece of advice is to have a few pairs in your rotation. Wearing the same pair everyday is asking for them to get beat-up in a hurry. Lastly, perhaps try not to drag your feet. More friction against the sidewalk = more wear to your bottoms.

Tip-of-the-Day: The Refresh Button

Most guys have a navy blue blazer (if you don't, you should get one). It certainly is, and has been for a very long time, a staple to the everyman's wardrobe.

The problem is, you wear it all the time and you are getting tired of it, but you also don't want to get a new one because you can't justify spending money for something you already have. Here is a simple and cost effective solution to refreshen your blue blazer: change the buttons!

Take your blazer to your tailor and tell him/her that you want new buttons put on it (or if you're crafty, you can sew them on yourself, like I did yesterday). Assuming the buttons are currently black, you can change them to something classic (but a little bolder) like light brown marble, gold, or silver. Or you can throw caution to the wind and go with something a little more in-your-face like a guy I met the other night who had red plastic buttons on his jacket (which looked so cool...I'm peeved I forgot my camera).

I’m really into this slim tie thing, but I’m 6’2, and whenever I try to make a knot, no matter if it is a four-in-hand or a Windsor knot, whatever I get is a really tiny knot. As a result, people stare at the knot itself (or the near non-existence of it) not the tie. I know a small collar may help, but, do you have any specific technique to make a good knot in a skinny tie?

Hey, great question! I know exactly what you are talking about, and it can be frustrating.

Yes, a smaller collar would help balance out your smaller knot (and would look very "of the moment"), although I am not a big fan of the tiny collar thing that has taken over in high-fashion. The trick is to use a higher quality, thicker (not wider, but more "gerthy") tie made of multi-ply silk. Regardless of the width of the tie, this will help give your knot some heft. If you are not up for getting all new ties, try knotting your tie further down its body, making it longer so that you don't have to pull it so tight (the looser you tie it, the bigger your knot will be).

Short of that, I wouldn't go too crazy trying to reinvent your skinny tie wardrobe...my prediction is it won't be very long before all the super-skinny stuff is "soooo yesterday".

I am not really muscular but in order to get the proper fit in the chest I have to go with a suit with pants that are much too big in the waist. I understand I need to get the suit altered, but they can only take-in the waist so much right?

Hey. Thanks for reading.

Like alot of my friends, you have an athletic build which makes it hard to fit suits. Unfortunately for guys like you, the standard suit comes with a 6 or 7 inch "drop", meaning the waist measurement of the pants is 6 or 7 inches smaller than the chest measurement of the jacket (i.e. suit size 40, waist size 33 or 34). Since we are all human and rarely fit this standard mold, this makes it difficult for many guys to buy suits off-the-rack.

Unless you are ready to make the jump to custom, you need to buy suit separates rather than suits. Think of it as a matching jacket and pants sold separately of which you can choose any size. Get the jacket in whatever size fits you in the shoulders and chest, then you can easily have the sides taken-in and the sleeves lengthened/shortened at your local tailoring shop (or have it done at the store when you buy the jacket). Get the pants in whatever size fits your waist best, the less taking-in/letting-out the better.

Great Blog, as always. I'm 6' 6" with a slender body type and in a dress shirt my sleeve length is 36/37. It's always been a challenge for me to to find long sleeve casual shirts that fit my arms. Most manufacture's XL shirts are way to baggy on me and look sloppy and I generally am better with a Large-Tall size shirt. Since a lot of the nicer clothing brands don't carry Tall sizes I'm limited in what I can wear and end up shopping a lot at Banana Republic, who does. Any tips on how a tall man can expand his wardrobe and dress stylish?

Hey, thanks for reading. Coincidentally, after playing basketball in college, many of my friends are of the tall variety (think 6'6" to 7'1") so I can relate to what you are going through.

You have the right idea with not sizing-up just to get the added sleeve length. Definitely look for the Large-Tall size rather than traditional XL. Stick with shirts that fit you in the neck and shoulders, then if necessary you can easily get the sides taken-in at your local seamtress for about $10-$15. Between Bananarepublic.com, Jcrew.com and Polo.com, who all carry tall sizes, you should have more than enough selection. Each one of these brands makes a quality product, so if you know how to put it together, you can look just as good (if not better) than shorter guys wearing the "for small guys only" high-fashion brands.

Then came the great 1950's chic advertising guru Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm) on Mad Men.

And most recently, Neil Caffrey (played by Matthew Bomer) debued yesterday as "the world's coolest [and best dressed] con man" on White Collar.

Not that I watch much tv, but if this is the direction that series' are heading, maybe I'll start making more time to watch.

How to Shop Vintage

The most stylish guy you know probably wears used clothing. However, shopping at vintage, second-hand and thrift stores is a very different experience than shopping in department stores. It can certainly be overwhelming looking at racks and racks of used clothing. So here are some helpful tips:

1. Do your research. Search online for the vintage stores in your area with the biggest selecion / best prices. Keep in mind that some of the more popular vintage stores can get pricey, but this does not mean the clothing is better quality.

2. Know what you are looking for. Before you head to the store, make a list of things you would like to add to your wardrobe. For the most part these stores are arranged by "type of clothing", for example all the denim jackets are in one section, so a list of what you are looking for can help you navigate the usually jam-packed racks and piles of clothing. If you've never shopped vintage before or are unsure what to pick up, here are my top vintage go-to picks...

denim jacket (the classic levi trucker is my favorite)

denim/chambray shirt

black or gray leather jacket

military utility jacket

authentic wool Navy peacoat

levis 501 jeans

lace-up boots

chunky cowichan cardigan sweater

brown antique-looking leather belt

flannel casual button-down shirts (plaid/check patterns are the most popular right now)

3. Inspect the clothing. If you find something you like, make sure to look it over for holes, rips, stains, etc. Look on the inside for fraying seams as these could easily let go. Smell the fabric to make sure it doesn't smell like grandpa (or worse).

4. Try it on! Fit is even more important when wearing vintage, you don't want to look like you're wearing your big brothers hand-me-downs.

5. Get to know the person who runs the joint. These stores are usually owned and operated by one or two people, and they are usually the coolest, most interesting people you can meet. They're also the buyers for the store so if you can't find what you're looking for, odds are they can pick it up on their next buying trip.

6. Wash it before you wear it. You don't know where it's been, or how long it's been sitting around getting musty in the store.

7. Don't go full vintage right away. Wearing vintage from head to toe is risky. If you're new to vintage shopping start working your "new" pieces into your wardrobe slowly by matching them with staples you already have.

Vintage Shopping!

I love shopping at second-hand and vintage stores. Not only is it a great way to shop on a budget, but you can find some really unique pieces. In fact, some of the most stylish people I know only shop at these kinds of stores! Check out these vintage threads I just picked up.

Plaid Wool "Work" Coat ($35)

To be styled with: This unique casual coat will look great paired with a washed oxford shirt, cardigan sweater, distressed jeans, and the Bean Boots I just wrote about.

The "little-more-out-there" stylist: Knowing me and the way I put things together, I might even wear this with a white club-collar oxford cloth shirt, a gray wool bow tie, slim dark jeans slightly rolled and broken-in burnished brogues. And something about this jacket goes perfect with my tan/brown Filson duffle.

Levi "Trucker" Jacket (I cut the sleeves off to wear it as a vest) ($30):

To be styled with: Throw it over the season's most popular shirt, the plaid flannel, and finish it off with a pair of slim chinos or cords and some brown suede chukka boots or classic sneakers like Chuck Ts

The "little-more-out-there" stylist: Use it as a layering piece under a chunky shawl collar cardigan or even a lightweight peacoat. And don't be afraid to wear it with jeans (preferably of a darker wash).

Love this sweater. Reminds me of home (believe it or not, I grew up on a farm).

Hey, thanks for the Columbia love!

I love double monkstrap shoes, they are certainly head-turners (especially when done with such Italian panache). However, I find it difficult to find a pair that has a sleek design and a nicely shaped toe, many look boxy and more "old school academic" than "bad ass stylish motherf-er" (as I like mine to look, hah). I'd say these Alan Edmonds fall in the first category more than the second.

Allan Edmonds is one of only two brands still making shoes in the US (the other being Alden), and their history is strongly woven into the national landscape since they provided shoes for the Army and Navy during WWII. They are excellently crafted shoes that will certainly outwear many other brands. With that said, though, there is something about their design that always struck me as suitable for older gentlemen who are not trying to make too much of a style statement.

Since you graduated in '08, my suggestion would be to find something slighlty more sleek. I would start with the Italian fashion houses. Take a look at the two pairs below by Prada and Gucci, respectively. It's kind of hard to explain, but see how their shape just looks more "style-aggressive" (the soles are not as bulky, the toes are sharply rounded, the monk straps are slimmer and slightly angled). These small details might not seem like a big deal, but it makes all the difference.

The price will be comparable to slightly more expensive than the A Edmonds, but remember the golden rule of buying footwear. Not to mention, if you get the right pair, you can wear them dressy, wear them casually...wear them as much as you f-ing want.

Tip-of-the-Day: Say NO to designer belt buckles!

We get it. You went to Hermes, or Ferragamo, or Dolce & Gabanna and spent $300+ on a new belt, and you want everyone to know. The irony is, there is nothing that makes a man look more corny (and borderline insecure) than a "I paid alot for this!" belt buckle. Not only does it take attention away from your outfit, but it pretty much screams "fashion victim".

Instead fellas, go with something slim, classic and subtle, like this alligator skin piece by Martin Dingman for dressy occasions:

On a similar note, if someone asks you what brand name a piece of your clothing is, don't be quick to shout a high-end designer's name. It doesn't make you cool. Even if you remember the exact price and the sale associates face, play it cool and act like you don't remember. Modesty is charming.

Wow. Speechless...

Although the dominant theme will always be clothing-based, the subject of this blog is style, not fashion. There is a big difference. So once in a while I will feature things that I find stylish and inspiring, like this short film by Spike Jonze featuring Kanye West. This was originally supposed to be the music video for "See you in my nightmares", but this is the kind of thing that happens when two creative geniuses collaborate.

If you haven't noticed, I am a huge Kanye West fan. Yes, I know he has issues, but who doesn't? One of my favorite designers, Michael Bastian, nailed it when he said, "Kanye West does his own thing. What I love the most about his style is that he wears every designer in the world, but you don’t see the designer—you just see him.". With projects like the one below, he proves that he will continue to do "his own thing", and you or I will never be able to predict his next creative move.

I must congratulate you on your blog. It's been a great inspiration to many including myself. Like myself, I know you like to interchange formal and casual items. I have recently read your tip of the day on watches, despite it being posted short of 3 months ago, but it left me partially questioning myself. I'm a big fan of large watches and I've been seeking one for quite some time.

My question… I rarely see unconventional oversized (51mm) watches paired with a suit, they tend to be smaller, classier, and a bit more discreet. Will the white oversized one look odd and/or out-of-proportion?

51mm! That's not a watch, that's a wall clock with a wristband! Unless you're Shaq Diesel at 7'2" / 350 lbs, I think it'll look a little funny with a suit. Your shirt cuff*, and maybe even your suit sleeve, will likely not fit over it's gigantic case, causing it to distract from your outfit rather than add to it.

I am a big fan of that Nixon piece, and love the idea of a white ceramic watch as a way to break up a "dressy" outfit, but I'd stay in the 35-41mm range (which is still considered L - XL). Don't go with the super-played-out white G-Shock...I'm pretty sure Nixon makes some smaller sizes. Although if it were me, I would save the $2,400 to invest in a more suit-appropriate classic that I can grow old with and pass down to my children like the Cartier Tank Solo or the IWC Portuguese, and find another way to dress down my suits. But hey, it's your money.

I like the look of wearing loafers without socks when it's hot, but I hate the feel (and smell) of wearing shoes w/o socks. Do you have a suggestion for socks/stockings that cover only the necessary parts of the foot w/o peaking above the loafer?

Of course! Many men are uncomfortable with authentic socklessness, and opt for faking it with "no show" or "loafer" socks; extra low cut socks that sit lower than the top of your shoes. Get them in black or brown (or whatever color to match your shoes in case they play peek-a-boo). You can pick up these from Banana Republic, 2 pairs for $14.99.

Hey! Thanks for reading. It's actually surprising how many messages I get from women who read my blog, so don't feel alone :) I'm glad you asked the gym attire question, its a popular one, and one that hits close to home. When I was an athlete in high school and college I literally lifted weights in rags and in a gym that (purposely) resembled a dungeon. It was all about toughness, grittiness and grunting. But now that I'm a grown man, no longer an athlete, and inevitably held to a standard after winning the said award, I've had to restructure my workout wardrobe.

First and foremost your gym attire needs to be functional. It should be comfortable, allow you to do full range of motion, and not get in the way of whatever exercise you are doing. Secondly, it is important, as when getting dressed for any occasion, to know and understand your body. If you sweat excessively wear darker colors to hide your wet patches and avoid leaving shiny streaks on the weight machines by keeping the cut-off shirts at home. Thirdly, keep in mind the movements you'll be making and dress accordingly; nobody wants to see a man's hairy lower back or sweaty upper thighs. Oh, and fourthly, no "wife-beater" tank-tops - no matter how "jacked" you are.

I usually wear workout specific "dry fit" polyester shirts because they contour the body without being sprinter-tight and they have "cooling" technology which (allegedly) breathes better than cotton and pushes sweat to the surface to ease evaporation and keep you dry and cool. With that I usually wear basketball shorts and running shoes with ankle socks, and an ipod clipped to the front of my shorts with the headphone wire running inside my shirt to keep it out of the way.

Per some of your requests, I will host my own "Ten Essentials", a popular feature seen on what used to be men.style.com (r.i.p.) where designers, celebrities, and other fashion-forward individuals list the "10 things they can't go without". So here's my crack at it...

1. Blackberry 8900

With my blackberry in hand not only can I check my email and surf the web, but I can keep in touch with friends in Canada for free, take and send street-style pictures, and blog remotely.

2. Montblanc Timewalker

I wear this watch everyday. It's case is the perfect size to go from dressy to casual (with a quick band change) and I love the neutral no-frills face. It also has sentimental value to me; at 19 years old it was the first time my self-contained business allowed me to spend over $1000 on something (yes, I've been buying my own clothes since the beginning of highschool)

3. Vintage Levis Denim Jacket

This is the perfect lightweight jacket. I wear it with everything from a t-shirt and chuck taylors to a dress shirt and bow tie. The best part, it gets better with time and only cost me $35 at a vintage clothing store.

4. Unlimited NYC Metro Card

I ride the subway. Everywhere. In NYC public transportation is often faster than cabbing-it and you are sure to come across some unique people and great street style on the train. Call me green (and economical).

5. Red Tod's Car Shoes

I love footwear, especially the in-your-face "my kicks are fresh" type of footwear (maybe it's from my roots as a basketball player/hip-hop fanatic). Nevertheless, these are one of my favorite pairs, and whenever I wear them women literally stop me in the street to compliment them, so they pad the ego as much as the outfit :)

6. APC New Standard Jeans

I've written about these in the past. The best all-purpose jeans that money can buy. Need I say more?

7. Basketball

If it wasn't for the game of basketball I probably wouldn't have gone to college, I wouldn't live in NYC, and I certainly wouldn't be writing this blog. The game has been the single most important influence in my life, and to this day I try to play 3-4 times a week to stay in shape and satisfy my passion for the game.

8. Filson Duffle Bag

The perfect bag. Utilitarian enough to look rugged and "manly" and clean enough in design to be carried with any outfit including my finest suit. Whether I'm heading to the gym or traveling for the weekend, I just "throw it in the bag".

9. Michael Andrews Bespoke

Every stylish man needs a good tailor. For me it is certainly an "essential". I take all my alterations and custom clothing orders to the experts at MAB.

10. Persol 649

Shades are my favorite accessory, and I usually go with these tortoiseshell frames made popular by Steve McQueen to complete my look.

Reader Question: Contrasting Opinions

Hey SB! LOVE the blog, my coworkers and I read it daily, keep it coming!

My question is concerning contrast collar shirts (i.e. colored shirts with white collars and cuffs). I've been trying to convince a coworker of mine that these shirts are outdated, but he stands by them. Perhaps you can solve our difference of opinion. What is your take? Thanks!

You, my friend, are 100% correct.

Unless you are dressing like Michael Douglas from Wall Street (or any other greedy '80s banker) for Halloween, these shirts should stay in the closet. It is a very difficult look to pull off without looking outdated, especially if the shirt is that once popular solid medium/royal blue color.

However, if you are planning on being MD for Halloween, don't forget the double pleated pants, the striped suspenders with white fasteners, and the gold tie bar cocked slightly at a downward angle (none of which are endorsed by this blog). Oh, and don't forget your loaf-of-bread-sized cell phone, which you should refer to as your "portable" phone.

In related news, keep an eye out for the well-tailored Shia Lebeouf in Wall Street 2 dropping February 2010.

Tip-of-the-day: These pockets are made for using...

Your blazer/suit jacket/sport coat, or whatever you want to call it, has pockets. These are not decorations. Carefully cut them open (since they are usually sewn shut on a new jacket) and use them!

Remember that clothing, from its origin, was designed for utility. Not only does it cover your nudy parts, but it also keeps you warm, comfortable and holds your everyday nick-nacks. With that said, there is something classy and stylish about a man who knows how to "use" his clothes the way they were designed to be "used". Think of it this way; pants are meant to fit at the waist, which explains why your young hipster cousin looks foolish (and looks like he is trying way to hard to be rebelliously "cool") when he sags his pants down below his ass.

On one of my (and probably also your) favorite street style bogs, The Sartorialist, photographer Scott Schuman frequently shoots his male subjects with their hands in their jacket pockets. See below.

Reader Question: Homemade Stay Slots

Hey SB. Nice blog. I rarely read Esquire but saw you there. Congrats on the "best dressed" award.

Further to the issue of the "floppy collar", several of my favorite shirts don't have sewn-in slots for collar-stays. I've had my tailor iron in some stiff fabric to one of them as a test but it didn't work. These are Martin & Osa shirts - not the best but they fit me and my style well. Any thoughts as to how I can stiffen up the collars?

Hey, thanks for reading. A while back I also came across this problem, where my collars were "floppy" and they didn't have slots for collar stays. I brought these shirts to my local dry-cleaners/alterations place and simply had the seamstress sew some makeshift collar stay slots onto the underside of the collars. It worked out well and now I can pop in my metal collar stays (or, even better, the magnetic ones I wrote about not long ago) and my collars stand at attention.

As a tip, try one shirt first to see if you like the way it comes out, and bring a shirt with built-in collar stay slots with you to the seamstress to show as an example before any sewing begins.

Tip-of-the-Day: Perky Pocket

Don't you hate when your pocket square falls into your pocket and nobody can see it? Well I do.

Here's a quick and simple solution: pin it in place.

I usually do this with a simple lapel pin (the ones with the small gold clip on the backside). Reach down inside your breast pocket and stick the pin through your folded (or "puffy") pocket square and through the inside of your pocket so that the small clip is on the inside of your jacket.

For those who don't like the idea of making a small hole in your jacket lining, the same trick can be accomplished using small magnets.

There you go, no more pesky disappearing pocket accessories.

Hey. I'm great! Thanks.

I understand why you'd want to look like Bradley Cooper, but this photograph is from a black tie event (i.e. tuxedo time). A wedding is not time for a tux for those attending as guests. I wouldn't wear black to a wedding either, it's a little too serious (and has a funeral vibe which can kinda send the wrong message). A wedding is a celebration, not time for mourning (regardless of how great you and your friend's bachelor days were).

Since the wedding is at night, you should go with something on the darker side. Alot of guys will be wearing black and navy, so if you want to stand-out from the crowd a little, go with a medium gray or even brown. Since it is spring down there, I would keep the shirt crispy white, leave the tie and socks at home, and throw on your most comfortable dance-friendly lace-ups. Have fun!

For the record, I don't agree with Coopers' going tie-less with a tux, or the black shirt for that matter...when wearing a tux you should be at your best and keep it simple, don't mess with it. Fun fact: the traditional reason why a tux is so "standard" (simple, no frills, black and white) is so that men can blend-in and let their women shine brightly in their dresses. But that's neither here nor there, and subject for a separate post.

Tip-of-the-Day: Cedar Stinkproofers

I thought this was a given, but you need to put shoe trees in your leather shoes! All of them. Every time you come home and take them off to pass out on the couch.

Get a decent pair of shoe trees made out of cedar wood. You can pick them up at just about any department or housing store and not only do they add years of life to your shoes by holding their form to avoid creasing, but the cedar wood also absorbs moisture and odor.

So before you head out for the night on the sockless bandwaggon, make sure you ain't bringing the funk to the party.

Reader Question: Inseam Unease

My question is about suit pants and the proper length. Some magazines suggest having your pants a little shorter than normal and either going sockless or adding some splashes with some wild socks which I liked both looks. However if i just want some normal looking suit pants where should I get them hemmed to? The askmen.com website suggests half way between the ground and top of the sole of the shoe. I felt this was too long. Please let me know what you think. Thanks

Hey thanks for reading. Hmmm. "Normal" looking is not my forte (just kidding), I know what you mean. Although it's a cool look, depending on the occasion, the weather, the season, your shoes, etc. sometimes you just don't want your ankles showing.

People have been arguing back and forth about inseam lengths for ages, and everybody has their opinion (along with level of traditionalism). It really comes down to a matter of personal preference. Do what makes you feel comfortable.

As a general guideline I wear my pants slightly (1/2" or so) shorter in the summer. If you are really anal (like me) you can learn to hem your own pants and change the length by the season, but if you are looking for something "normal" that can be worn year round I'd say my new "standard" would hit at about 1/4" - 1/2" past the top of the back of your shoe, and try having them hemmed slightly at an angle so that the front is not breaking too much.

I get alot of questions from college students regarding dressing well but not feeling over-dressed. The truth is, looking stylish can easily be done very casually.

Recently I was sent a link to a segment on Playboy.com featuring new hip-hop artist Asher Roth called "Asher Roth's Back to Campus Fashion". I thought it would be "appropriate" to share. Some ok looks, but even better eye "candy".

Tip-of-the-Day: Rubber Band Man

Here's a pet peeve of mine...You know when have the perfect shirt tuck-in, all the way around, perfectly placed...then you bend over or reach up for something, and your shirt pulls out at the sides and billows around your waist? Yeah, I hate that.

The fact of the matter is, with your everyday movements your shirt is bound to pull out of your pants and look sloppy around the waist. However, there is a (very clever) solution to avoiding this.

Have your tailor put a small, ribbed rubber strip on your trousers' inner waistband. This "sticky strip" this will keep your shirt from sliding out of your pants.

My boys at Michael Andrews Bespoke include this feature in all of their pants...and trust me, it works great!

No more need to continuously re-tuck that pesky shirt tail.

Tribute to THE KING

I am a HUGE Michael Jackson fan.

I just finally found the time to watch the MTV Video Music Awards, and loved the MJ tribute. Madonna's speech was great, especially this line: "there is no question Michael Jackson was one of the greatest talents the world has ever known". The best part of the tribute was that although the imitation dancers did a tremendous job, if you watch the video screen behind them of Michael himself dancing, you can clearly see why he was so special. Nobody can compare.

Before you focus on the tainted view of Michaels life defined by the issues and accusations in his later years, consider this as proof that he was the man. A relative of mine once attended an MJ concert in the early 90's. The show was sold out and he put on an incredible performance. So incredible that the show had to be stopped six times because women were fainting and needed to be carried out of the arena. Six times (in two hours)! When have you ever had that effect on a woman?

Not only did Michael (damn I hate writing in past tense) make legendary hit after legendary hit, but he was also a true style icon, and since I was away when Michael passed, I never really had the chance to write a worthy post on his unique and inspiring style.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that wearing a sparkling studded glove to the office tomorrow morning is a good idea, but Michael's style can be used as inspiration to dress with self-expression and find YOUR own unique look. Just keep in mind that entertainers have a full time "wear whatever I f-ing want" pass (case and point, Lady Gaga, below).

Don't try to be Michael, but don't be afraid to be YOU.

Tip-of-the-Day: A new shirt wardrobe for $20!

When wearing a suit with an open collar (no tie, one or two buttons undone) your best bet is to wear a button-down collar shirt so that the collar "sticks up", holds its form, and effectively frames your face.

However, most guys who wear ties on a daily basis generally have a collection of point or spread collar shirts (not button-downs) because these typically are easiest to pair with a tie. The problem is, when you remove your tie the collars on these shirts will flatten out and hide under your lapel, losing your collar's clean neckline.

See below...George's collar is "floppy" and doesn't frame his face, while Brad's stands upright which creates a nice clean line making him look more "put together". See the difference:

Therefore, in the past I would recommend that a man have one collection of shirts to wear with ties (typically with point, classic or spread collars) and a separate collection to wear open under a suit jacket (with button-down collars or large stiff-pressed collars).

The good news is, the solution is here...and it only costs $20. Warning...this might make you think "Damn! Why didn't I think of that!?"

They're called "Wurkin Stiffs". They're magnetic collar stays with small (but strong) magnets that hide inside your collar to effectively hold your collar open and up-right, making you look like Brad below (or at least making your collar look like his).

1. I'm feeling the whole tie bar look and just got a pretty sweet one off of amazon.com...The more I rock it, the more I am realizing that I could have gotten a much better one. Mine is a little lengthy and isn't the kind that snaps into place, thus sliding it over the tie is a little annoying. Can you link/recommend any better alternatives that wont break the bank?

1. There are thousands of tie bars out there, of all lengths and widths. Some have engravings, some are even "bejeweled". My advice is to keep it simple...as simple as possible. Go with a narrow silver tie bar, 2 inches long (ideally you want your bar to reach perfectly across the width of your tie, no shorter, no longer). The one I wear is by Tiffany & Co. It is 100% .925 silver which will last longer than I will, and will not go out of style any sooner. Find it here. J. Crew has a similar one which is a little cheaper. Some guys get it engraved with their last name or something inspirational, but in my opinion this looks tacky. If you feel the need to mark your territory do it on the underside where it is concealed but just as much "yours".

2. I usually try to buy pants that are already tapered down in the ankle, but if you find a pair that you really like and they are not slim enough through the leg, yes you can have them tapered by your tailor. Just make sure you go to a good tailor because it can be tricky to make the tapper look natural. I wear my pants slimmer than most American men at about 7-7.5" across the hem, I recommend to most guys to go with an 8" ankle to be "safe".

I was wondering if you ever found it difficult to dress as well as you do to class and on campus, often I find myself feeling somewhat ashamed that I am trying to look my best but my friends and peers sometimes dress like slobs. I am also a student-athlete at my school and a lot of my friends and teammates largely do not care about their attire, which makes me feel largely out of place. Have you ever had any experiences like this? Thanks.

Hey there. Thanks for reading. It's an interesting question, and I certainly know where you are coming from. College athletes, for a number of understandable reasons (time management issues, early morning workouts, running from the classroom to the gym etc.) often aren't concerned with dressing well. It took me a while to establish the "reputation" for being able to pull off whatever look I wanted without people saying "who the hell is this guy and why is he dressed like that?".

I always thought it was funny that, when getting dressed, so many American men value sameness and sticking out from the crowd is frowned upon. I'm from a different camp. I'd rather stand out from the crowd (in a positive way) then look like just another average Joe.

My advice would be that while you should dress for the occasion (I wouldn't necessarily wear suits to class) you can still look put-togeter and stylish while keeping it more casual and laid back. Check out this awesome slide show from men.style.com which focuses on "collegiate inspired" looks. Although the price points may not be college student friendly, the looks are very inspiring and can point you in the right direction as far as putting together looks that are not too classy for class, but not grungy enough for the gridiron.

And when you're teammates get on you for being "overdressed" (believe me, I've been there) just laugh it off...remember it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed...and don't forget to smile at the girls on campus when you walk by ;)

The Most Stylish Music Video Ever?

I am absolutely loving the transition of hip-hop music and culture. I've always been a big fan of hip-hop music for its creativity, originality and its "anything is possible" attitude.

Love it or hate it, hip-hop has always been very influential and has always had a strong impact on youth culture, specifically on the way young people dress. So now that rappers are rhyming about Martin Margiela ("ain't nobody fresher, I'm in Maison, uh, Martin Margiela" -Jay-z in "Run This Town") and wearing high-end fashion brands like Tom Ford and Calvin Klein Collection (see picture below), we are seeing more and more people wanting to dress-up and wear clothing that is slimmer, more tailored and more fashion-forward.

This transition, which is due in large part to the genius and influence of Kanye West, is producing a whole different type of music video, like the one below, which is part short film, part work of art, and part runway show.

Tip-of-the-Day: The in-betweener

It's true, there is definitely a movement in men's fashion right now inspiring men to mix casual/sportswear with tailored/formal wear in the same outfit to create an "in-between" look comfortable and appropriate for most occasions. This is not a bad thing, I often do it myself. If pulled off properly, it can be a fresh twist on some of your classic pieces. Example:

This "in-between" look can either be accomplished by adding some formal pieces to a casual look (add a waistcoat or blazer to your usual shirt + jeans look) or adding more casual elements to a "dressier" look (throwing on a pair of classic sneakers with a suit, or throwing a vintage denim jacket over your shirt + tie look). Casual-ling up a look, however, is not accomplished by simply leaving your shirt untucked. I see so many men, especially in the nightlife scene, wearing the same shirts they wear during the day, but because they are at "play" and not at work, they change their trousers for jeans, lose the tie and leave their shirts untucked - with shirt tails ballooning past their back pockets.

An untucked shirt does not make a look more casual, just more sloppy, bordering immature. So today's tip is quite simple: when in doubt, tuck your shirt in! (Yes, even when wearing jeans).

With that said, not all shirts need to be tucked in, but you should know the difference. The vast majority of button-down "dress" shirts are long through the body and are meant to be tucked-in (hence the extra fabric in the tail which prevents the shirt from becoming untucked with your day-to-day movement). There are other shirts, however, which are meant to be left untucked - these are shorter, slimmer cut and hit just past your hips (see cuts by Band of Outsiders or American Apparel).

One last thing...If you are wearing a tie, a waistcoat/vest, a cardigan, a v-neck, or basically any other kind of sweater/layer over your shirt (other than outerwear), ALWAYS tuck your shirt in. The shirt ends poking out from under your sweater are not flattering.

It is true, not all men have pseudo-model body types, including me. With that said, not all men look good in slim-fitting suits and skinny ties.

What's with the denim fetish in America?

Spending time in Europe taught me many things. One of which is that American men are obsessed with denim. Everywhere you go it's jeans, jeans, jeans. Some guys only wear jeans, everyday.

Don't get me wrong, I love denim too...but wearing your heavy Japanese selvage denim in the heart of the sticky summer with sweat beading down your brow just doesn't make sense.

Invest in some lightweight cotton pants. Khakis, chinos, cotton trousers, whatever you want to call them. Not only do they breathe much better, but they give you a smarter summer casual look. Pick up (at least) one pair in a medium/dark shade of "khaki" and one pair in navy, these two go with just about anything. Depending on your level of boldness, you can wear pretty much any color you want. I wore my lime green pants ($8 at H&M) the other day and people loved 'em.

As a guide, keep them slim through the leg (tapered or straight), medium/low rise, and about 7-8" width across at the ankle (slim at the ankle is crucial!). Again, if your swagger is turned up enough (and your ankles caught some sun this summer), wear them rolled with no socks or get them hemmed a half inch above the back of your shoes.

The other good thing about switching to these pants, especially for denim lovers, is that it will spice up your relationship once the temperature creeps down in the fall and you and your favorite jeans can rekindle the old flame.

Tip-of-the-Day: Beware of the Epaulet Take-Over

There was a time, a couple of years ago now, when it was cool to wear a military-inspired jacket or shirt with epaulets (shoulder straps) on the shoulders. This time is now passed.

It was a trend, and as with any trend, anybody and everybody jumped on the bandwagon and epaulets began popping up everywhere, including stores like H&M and Zara, which means everybody was rocking these way-overused shoulder garnishes. Even more corny was that these straps began showing up where they certainly didn't belong or make sense, including t-shirts, leather jackets and sport coats, all of which look absolutely ridiculous.

Today's tip: stay away from any kind of sleek, modernized form of the epaulet. Unless you are wearing a vintage fatigue jacket or a classic trench coat, or you are in the military/law enforcement, a pilot, or a park ranger, try to stay away from shoulder straps altogether...most of the time it screams "look at me, I'm hip and trendy!".

Reader Question: Casual Summer Shoe

First off I think you have great style and give you the utmost respect for that.

Second... I wanted to know your opinion on what a good casual summer shoe would be. I wear a range of traditional boat shoes, drivers, and I just ordered a pair of white (really off white) Vans authentic canvas sneakers for summer. I hope they will work. Love Chucks and Vans but open to any opinion. What do you think?

Sounds like you have a decent spread there between boat shoes, drivers, chucks and vans. I'd say add a classic-looking loafer in a dark brown/burgandy. Something that is versatile enough to go from casual to dressy and everywhere in between. Check out the timeless Bass "Dover", found here. It is your safest option for most occasions.

But as you know by now, I'm not really about "playing it safe". My favorite shoes for summer are suede driver shoes; the brighter the color the better. The downside (which is also kinda the upside) is that they are really hard to find, especially at a reasonable price.

The best ones are made by Tod's and The Original Car Shoe (owned by prada), both of which run around $400 a pair. The Original Car shoe store, found only in Milan and Florence, is one of the coolest stores around simply because they have their signature shoe in basically every color...their wall of shoes looks like the nearby gelato shop selection with colors like Pineapple yellow and Mango orange .

At a more reasonable price ($105), there are these by new shoemaker Born. The red ones are hot, I just wish the laces and stitching were red also.

However, if you are like JD and Jay-Z in the summer of '98 and "Money Ain't a Thang", then here are my two favorite shoes this summer:

Tip-of-the-Day: Just Say No

The saying goes "never say never", but I'm saying it here. Never buy something that is not your size just because it's on sale. You will always regret doing this because it won't fit you properly, and as we all know by now, a good fit is key to looking your best.

The one exception is shoes. You can usually give or take a half size, and maybe even a full size if you REALLY want them, just make you are not limping home.

Give your polo a break

The everyman's go-to summer shirt has been replaced. The short sleeved button-up is the new polo.

Not only are they lighter in weight and breathe better because you can get them in poplin cotton (the lightest weight of cotton), but they are more versatile since you can adjust how much skin you want to show by fastening/unfastening the buttons. Plus (do not try this if you are a beginner) they can be worn with a tie or (even more difficult to pull off) a bow tie.

As a side note, for us fashionistos who change often, the shirt doesn't come over hear head so your hair will stay just the way you left it.

As always, it's all about fit. You want it slim through the body (just grazing your sides). Wear it untucked, just long enough to go a couple inches past your belt. The sleeves should be slim and hit about half way down your bicep.

I usually go without a pocket because I like the clean chest look, but having a pocket gives you a great place to put your shades when you walk inside, so it's a win/win.

Don't get me wrong, the polo is not dead, never will be, this is just a much needed way for men to switch up their limited summer shirt cycle.

I recently did an interview and was asked to fill in the blank: "A man can never have too many __________".

The answer is white dress shirts. Here's a secret of mine: although I change outfits all the time, sometimes a few times a day, and wear some off-the-wall stuff, I wear a white dress shirt probably 3-4 times a week.

A fresh white shirt is the perfect blank canvas to base your look around, it can be layered with basically anything, and it pops beautifully under a suit or jacket of any color. If you're ever not sure what color shirt to wear with a suit or tie, go with solid white. It never fails...so long as you keep the red wine in the glass and the red lipstick on her lips (or anywhere but on your collar ;)

Tip-of-the-Day: Open Up Your Cuffs

I often get asked the question "How can you tell, by looking at him, if a guy's suit is expensive or not?". My answer is usually "Who Cares? If he looks good, he looks good...it's not about price tags". BUT, there is one thing I always look for when I see at a stylish guy in a suit: working cuffs.

Most off-the-rack suit jackets/blazers have 3 or 4 buttons on the cuff (the end of the sleeve) which are only decorative - they do not serve any function. These buttons do not open or close since there is no hole for them to fasten through. They are made this way in order to allow the sleeves to be altered (made longer or shorter) according to the buyer. After all, not all men are created (physically) equal.

However, if a suit is custom made, either "bespoke" or "made-to-measure", since the sleeves have already been measured to the perfect length for the wearer, the cuffs will be what is called "working cuffs" or "surgeons cuffs"; where the buttons can be opened and closed. This may not seem like a big deal, but it does allow you to effectively roll up the sleeves of your jacket when the times (or your style) call for it - which is one of my favorite looks right now, especially on an unlined cotton jacket.

Now since most guys aren't interested in paying $1,500+ for a custom-made suit, here is a little secret of mine... When you get your sleeves adjusted to your ideal length (which is MUCH shorter than most tailors will suggest - tell them you want at least 1/2" of shirt cuff to show) you can also get your cuffs opened (granted you are seeing a decent tailor) for a small fee ($20 - $25). You can also add or remove buttons if you wish. I usually wear 5 working buttons on my jackets because I'm 6'2" with long arms and because I love to be different. As a side note, I'm working on designing a jacket with working buttons all the way up to the elbow - should be interesting.

Now I really didn't want to share this part, but what the hell... You can also customize your jacket by choosing to insert a grosgrain ribbon of your choice into the sleeve gusset - a popular look right now with high-end designers like Thom Browne who often puts his signature Red/White/Blue stripe in his jackets. Typically you need about 12 inches of 7/8" ribbon, but talk this over with your tailor to make sure he can do it and you pick up the right size. Any good fabric store should have a ribbon section with a good variety of colors/stripes/patterns/etc.

The coolest part is that the choices for grosgrain ribbon are pretty much endless. You can try to play off of a color in your jacket, go with a complimentary color, or go with something wacky like smiley faces or the way-over-done skull and crossbones monogram.

Wearing your jacket sleeves rolled up is a great look, but leaving a button or two unfastened at the end of your jacket just to show that you paid alot for it, as many wall-street types do, comes off a little asshole-ish. With that said, I still do it sometimes :/

Tip-of-the-Day: Refresh Your Band

Hey all. I'm back. The trip was incredible. My boy Ryan and I had some great times, learned alot, did alot of thinking/self-reflection, and (the good news for ya'll) it inspired me to bring my blog to new heights. Thanks again to all of those who sent emails and comments while I was away, responses are on the way.

As my first post back, I'm going with one of the most popular features, the "Tip-of-the-Day".

Buying a quality timepeice can be a tricky investment, 1) Because it will (hopefully) last you many years and 2) Because it could potentially break the bank. Here's a little trick that can help you make the most out of your wristpeice.

You only need one watch. Keep it simple and classic (no deep-sea diving instruments or drag-race stopwatch features). Keep the face a neutral color (white or gray are your best bets). And keep the case a medium size (from 36mm - 40mm) - small enough to look classy under a shirt/suit cuff and large enough to look cool when wearing it casually with a pair of retro J's. As an example, here's a pic of the Montblanc Timewalker that I wear:

Now here's the secret. Invest in one of these:

It's a watchband replacement tool which allows you to easily (with a steady hand to avoid scratches) remove the wrist band from your watch and replace it with another, granted your watch has standard spring pins (most do, but look into it to make sure). It only costs $4.95 here, a small price to pay to turn one simple watch into an accessory with unlimited options.

Some people pay a watch repair man to change their band, but doing it yourself not only saves you time and money but it also allows you to change your band according to your outfit, making it a much more versatile (and unique) accessory. Here is a good video describing how to change your band:

The Watch Prince is a great place to shop for affordable bands, just make sure you know the width that you need (measured in mm, typically 18-22). Start with the essentials:

1. Black Alligator and Brown Alligator. The dressiest band, looks great with suits and ties...remember to match your skins (see Tip-of-the-Day May 4 2009).

2. Black Rubber. Wear it when the times call for something casual or when working out/running.

3. Striped Ribbon. Perfect for the summer, when things get a little more casual and brighter in color.

Greetings from the oh-so-stylish land of Italy!

Recently a concerned reader raised a good point, and reminded me to clarify something about my posts.

The most important thing when it comes to style, in my opinion, is being unique and original. Because of that, therefore, there aren't really any "rules" to good personal style. So when I use the word "rule", which I will try to stop using from now on, what I mean is more "guideline" or "tip".

Therefore, when I write that the bow tie or denim jacket is "back", I do not mean that it wasn't as stylish before, but simply that it is becoming more popular among stylish men. At some point, of course, someone has to completely break the mold and be the first to start this kind of new "trend".

The take-away message here: if you have the confidence and style to pull it off, you can wear anything. Never limit yourself because of what others think, write in magazines or post on blogs...these are simply forums used to help, not control your style choices.

The Return of the Denim Jacket

In a related story, the denim jacket is also back like it forgot something.

With denim jackets, however, there is greater downside then upside, meaning it is much easier to get it wrong then it is to get it right. Here are some tips:

1. Keep it simple. Go with a basic "trucker-style" jacket with a collar and a button-front. Stay away from motorcyle collars, zippers, True-Religion-like stitching, or any other "designer" details. Levis is your best bet, they`ve been doing it for decades and have barely changed their awesome design.

2. Go vintage! If you can get your hands on a vintage denim jacket, one that has been well worn-in, grab it! I got mine on ebay from a real trucker whose been wearing it since long before I was born. When I got it it smelled like smoke and had holes in it...but after a good wash and a visit to my seamstress it is one of my favorite items in my wardrobe. I`m actually wearing it right now. Total cost: about $35.

3. Fit Fit Fit. A denim jacket should fit like a jacket, not a coat. It should be slim, snug in the shoulders and hit a little above your waist. As a guide, I`m 6 foot 2, 195 lbs and have a size 38 (S-M).

4. Rough up the collar. Wear the collar half-popped, or messed-up. Basically, make it look roughed-up, as should be.

5. Roll up the sleeves.

6. Wear it alot. It gets better with time, so don`t be afraid to get some use out of it. The beauty of it is that you can wear it with anything...from a shirt and tie to a layer over a graphic t-shirt, and everything in between.

7. Accesorize the left pocket. Not every time, but don`t be afraid to throw in a colorful linen/cotten pocket square (note "throw in", not folded square) or a pair of shades, or both.

WARNING, FOR ADVANCED SARTORIALISTS ONLY. 8. Wear it with jeans. That`s right, the old Canadian tuxedo. If you have the swagger to pull it off, try wearing your worn-in denim jacket with a pair of jeans in a different (preferably darker) wash. Never match them. This is one of my favorite looks right now. I even sometimes wear a denim/chambray shirt with it (in a third shade).

The Return of the Bow Tie

Ladies and gentlemen, the bow tie is back! Welcome back little friend, we`ve missed you.

Bow ties are showing up on the streets more and more, so if you`ve been thinking about trying one out, do it asap...it still hasn`t gone quite mainstream, so you still have time before it becomes "played out".

If you`re a beginner in the bow tie game, the trick is to keep it dark, with a simple pattern, and, most importantly, keep it in proportion. For example, if you are 6 foot 9 like my main man Ben "Bid Watch" N. then a super slim bow tie by the likes of Thom Browne or Band of Outsiders might make your head look too big. On the other hand, if you are 5 foot 5 like my man Chris "Dimple Daddy" C. then an oversized neckpiece might make you look smaller than you`d like.

As a matter of fact, proportion is key in everything, not just bow ties...I`m working on a post on the importance of proportions...coming soon.

Lastly, stay away from clip-ons. Learn to tie one yourself, there are plenty of helpful links on the internet. And in case you are wondering, no, not all of my friends have nicknames :)

As I mentioned, I have been traveling Europe for the past few weeks, and have a had a hard time finding time to blog. We just stumbled upon a cozy little internet cafe in Vienna (our fifth country in 2 weeks) and have taken some time to do some catching-up online.

This trip has certainly been an eye-opening experience in many ways, including fashion.

Well done Button...

I watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last night for the second time. It is a great movie, although a tad long. The story is thick with life metaphors and historical context, but the best part of the film is Button's incredible wardrobe (although it doesn't make much sense that he's unemployed in New Orleans in the mid 1900's but wearing some serious designer threads). Nevertheless, it made the movie more interesting - at least for me. I love the use of wardrobe to further develop characters.

Of course, it doesn't take much to make Brad Pitt look good, but he rarely repeats any outfit, wears his clothing with a great nonchalance, and is always well suited for the occasion. Kudos to the wardrobe stylist. Watch and learn.

Also, a great quote that stuck with me from the movie:

“...What I think is, it’s never too late...or, in my case, too early, to be whoever you want to be...There’s no time limit, start anytime you want...change or stay the same...there aren’t any rules...We can make the best or worst of it...I hope you make the best...I hope you see things that startle you. Don't put your foot in your mouth, but let your kicks do the talking

I am often asked if it is possible for a man to pull-off sneakers (we're talking collectibles, like retro Jordans or limited edition Nike Dunks, for example) and look stylish - and not childish. The answer is yes, although it can be tricky.

While I rarely wear sneaks myself anymore, I used to have an extensive collection - from limited edition Air Force Ones to every Jordan from I to XX. So needless to say, I still have a certain fondness and nostalgia for a nice pair of kicks, especially if they are rare (after all, I'm all about being unique and original). Luckily, two of my long-time friends have perfected the art of grown-man-kickery.

The best way to do it, in my opinion, is to let the kicks do all the talking. That is, if your kicks are loud, don't put them in a shouting match with the rest of your outfit. Tame your outfit down, keep it simple, neutral, and (of course) well fitted. A simple, neutral-colored button-up or polo with khakis or plain jeans will have you looking like a grown man while also leaving a blank canvas for your kicks to jump off of.

Most men try to experiment with a dash of loud color in their outfits at some point or another (usually ties or pocket squares), this is just another (more casual) way to do it. Some minimal matching can slide, but the last thing you want to do is wear a bright pair of sneakers with a matching outfit (t shirt, hat, etc)...nobody will take you seriously, especially women.

Notice the picture below...if you look at it and put your hand over their feet to cover their shoes, they look like normal (although good looking and Italian) average Joes, just like everyone else. Go ahead, try it! Once you removed your hand, however, and look at their entire outfit, you start to get the sense that these two cats are unique, creative, original, cool, etc... They let their kicks do the talking...because their kicks have alot to say.

Father of the Groom

In order for a man to look his best, grooming (fresh hair cut, clean facial hair, etc) is essential.

The other day I was reunited with a group of old friends, and I was reminded of how unique my circle of friends really was. Many of the guys I grew up with did not necessarily have an interest in "fashion", but were always stylish and original. One friend in particular has incredible attention-to-detail when it comes to grooming. Check out my man in the picture below...while it may be a little extreme for some, the detail in the faded beard is inspiring.

A favorite quote of mine seems appropriate here: "the greatest limit on our creativity is the limit of our imagination".

Keep being unique and expressing yourself...trying too hard to "fit in" with everybody else causes you to lose your identity as an individual. I know, I know, this is becoming a little too deep for facial hair...but I love meeting people who are not afraid to be original.
